Job Description
xxxx Contractor Requirement: Technician must own or possess a T-berd tester to use at job site.
Purpose:
The basic function of this position is to provide onsite installation, repair, and maintenance support of voice and data systems for Contingent’s clients. Technician will own or possess the required test equipment to complete the Test and Turn-up of the circuits and fiber optic systems. We are looking for technicians with the following test sets:
JDSU 107A (or Equivalent) – for testing various T1 circuits
JDSU xxxx (or Equivalent) – for testing various PRI & DS3 circuits
JDSU xxxx (or Equivalent) – for testing various Ethernet circuits
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Test and Turnup all types of multiplexers to include: Nortel, Alcatel-Lucent, DSC, Adtran, Emerson, Tellabs, Cisco and PulseCom. Test and Turnup DACS (Digital Access Cross-connect Systems) Test and Turnup Ethernet equipment and circuits.
Analyze Troubles on our Customers' Equipment, Circuits and Fiber Optic Systems.
Furnish written and/or printouts of test results.
Test Fiber Optic Cables and Jumpers for continuity, loss, return loss, reflections or other imperfections.
Run tests with the NOC on equipment alarms that require IP Addresses.
Maintain a test equipment inventory and calibration due dates.
Provide technical expertise to other installers and management.
Be proficient using the follow test equipment: OTDR, Fiber Optic Transmission Measuring Set, Visual Light Laser,(may be required to use a test set for more complex testing of fiber optical) Bit Error Rate Test Sets to test metallic DS1 and DS3 Circuits Such as a T-BERD 310 or JDS UNIPHASE T-BERD xxxx with SONET Platform. Ethernet Test Sets such as the Transport Module for the T-BERD xxxx Platform.
Complete detailed T1 test result forms, T1 checklists and change order request forms.
Install, wire, test, terminate and troubleshoot T1/DS1 circuits.
Perform head to head tests on T1’s using T-Berd (or equivalent) meter from cell sites to MTSO/Switches and Base Station Controllers.
Provide over-the-phone T1 technical support.
Interact with clients, create and submit project completion reports and submit daily status reports.
Conduct initial site visit and make design recommendations.
Visit trouble sites and take necessary corrective action.
Keep the Project Manager/Installation Coordinator advised on the status of current projects.
Position Requirements:
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
3-5 years experience testing and trouble shooting of Telecommunication equipment
Central Office background and experience is preferred.
Proficient using laptop to connect to telecommunication equipment for testing purposes
Proficient installing and terminating Cat3, Cat5, Cat6, Fiber, CATV
Proficient in router/switch installation
Proficient in VOIP installations
Router configuration experience preferred (CCNA or equivalent)
Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to follow through assigned tasks
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to read and interpret blueprints
Proficiency in Microsoft operating systems and applications (Visio, Excel, Word)
Good driving record
Education
High school diploma
Technical degree from a trade school is desirable
Physical Requirements
Physical demands: Candidate must be able to lift up to 60 lbs and have the ability to climb a ladder.
Visual ability: Visual accommodation is necessary for reading blueprints and computer screen.
Hearing ability: Must be able to make and receive phone calls.
Working conditions:
Candidate will be subject to high noise levels, physical exposure to moving machinery, and exposure to fumes, dust, and mists.
Scope of Contacts
Incumbent will interface with most internal departments and will have a high degree of interface with external customers.
Degree of Control
High degree of confidentiality as incumbent has access to drawings, prints, and cost information.
Technician will receive minimal supervision reporting only unusual circumstances
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
Interpersonal Skills Required
Must exhibit a high degree of good interpersonal skills.
Industry Certifications
BICSI certification preferred
RCDD certification or currently pursuing certification preferred
Hourly rate: $18 - $24/hour
